UN offers help to flood-hit India, BD

UNITED NATIONS: The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) is prepared to support India and Bangladesh, South Asiain countries that are experiencing heavy rains and flooding, a top UN official said.
 
"The office is monitoring the situation in both countries and stands ready to support if the authorities request international assistance," UN spokesperson Martin Nesirky was quoted as saying by Xinhua.
 
According to OCHA, around 30 people have died and one million displaced due to monsoon rains in northeastern India.
 
In Bangladesh, at least 110 people have been killed in Chittagong and 40,000 people uprooted following three days of rain and flash floods, Nesirky said.
 
Around 850,000 people and about 70,000 hectares of cropland have been affected by floods in Assam, according to Agriculture Minister Nilamoni Sen Deka.
 
Train services and road links between Tripura, Manipur, Mizoram, parts of Meghalaya and the rest of India have remained cut off. Landslides at about 90 places, following incessant rains, have damaged roads, railway tracks and bridges. (Monitoring Desk)
